Lake Weiss Fishing Report
DATE: 7-16-2003
LAKE LEVEL: 564.0
NORMAL FULL POOL: 564.0
SURFACE TEMP: 88.8
WATER CLARITY: Most of the areas are fishable
CRAPPIE: Tons of short fish being caught in deep
water around structure. Hard to fish the old channel edges with the amount of
water they are pulling thru the lake. Rooster's reports that the ratio of
keeper crappie is improving. Still catching them deep and still catching them
under the Cowan Creek bridge at night.
Bass: Bass fishing continues to be strong. Spinner
baits in the morning and afternoon. Slow rolling them across the bottom. Later
in the day Carolina rigged soft plastics. Rooster's reports that there was a
small bass tournament out of Georgia there this weekend. It was a 2 day 1 man
tournament. 26 lbs. won the tournament. 5 fish limit. It is difficult to fish
the old river channel with the amount of water they are pulling thru. Any
drops or humps adjacent to deep water. Flipping the deeper docks with
pig-n-jig has been recently successful. Lets all practice catch and release.
Weiss is probably as strong or stronger for bass than any lake in the south.
STRIPE: A few starting to show up in the Chatooga
and the Brushy Branch area. Tailwater fishing has been tough with the amount
of water that they are pulling thru the dam. Ole Cotton Gin holds a few but
dingy and too much water flow.
WHITE BASS: A few surfacing in the mouth of Spring
Creek and Cowan Creek late. A few surfacing in Cornwall Furnace. Still a few
showing up in Mud Creek up to Ball Play.
BREAM: GUNTERSVILLE: The water is still a little
bit too high and too strong. A few days they should be strong as ever. Bottom
bumping 35-50 foot deep.
CATFISH: 300 lbs. + per weekend coming out of
Riverside noodling for them. Jug fishing still very productive at night. Trot
line fishing has been doing well in deep water. Cut shad still best bait.
30-50 lb. catfish coming from around the fish cleaning stations. Best time to
fish for them is from dusk to about 10 at night.
With the huge numbers of 9 7/8 inch fish being
caught, we all need to be aware of the poaching. Poachers are thieves! If you
see this activity please call Game Watch at 1-800-272-4263. The good news is
that we are going to have the best fall fishing in the history of Lake Weiss.
We have had consistently good spawns since 2000. We should have had a mega
spawn in 2003 with the high water. Weiss should continue to get stronger and
stronger each year. Please, take what you can eat and put the rest back. Hope
everyone is having a safe and happy summer. For our out of state fishermen you
can now get your license by phone at 1-888-848-6887. As always if we can be of
any help just give us a "holler".
Sincerely, Steve
