Fishing is on the up swing now that we have put some warm days together. I had a great day today. We caught 30 fish on both artificial and shiners. Big fish was 7 pounds 14 ounces. This fish was caught off a bed and quickly released. She was on a bed in about 1 1/2 ft of water and hit a watermelon fluke. So yes, there are bass moving back on beds.
They have the gates at Southport locks open 2 feet, so there is running water. We caught some nice fish there on Carolina Rigs using a Chartreuse centipede. When fishing in shallow water look for big swirls and go and fish it; look to see if there is a bed that the fish could be on. Also, fishing slow is still a good bet. Good areas are the west side of the
lakes across from Reds Fish Camp and the South side of the lake by Partins Ditch.
Fishing tip for a rattle trap:
1. As you are retrieving, give a hard pull with your rod to the left or right. Make the lure dart like a fish trying to escape.
2. Fish it like a jig and yo-yo it off the bottom. Let it hit the bottom then lift your rod up and let it fall.
3. Stop and go method: Reel your lure in quick then stop, give 3 to 4 fast turns with your reel then stop, do this throughout the entire cast. The fish will usually hit as you start retrieving your lure again.
