STS UPDATE - Paradise has been found!
What an Event! Prefishing results suggested that fishing would be good,
but no one had come close to predicting just how generous Hillman Marsh
would be. In fact not only did everyone catch fish, but it provided the
biggest weights of any STS event. Two anglers, both from the London Carp
Group Team, broke the previous STS record for largest individual weight in
an STS event. Even more impressive was the consistenly high catches of
every angler in the field averaging out at over 13 carp and 7 catfish per
angler.
Larry Jones was stationed behind one of the Record Setting rods witch paid
off with a back breaking bag of fish wieghing in at 55.02 kg (121 lbs).
Larry was stationed in the middle of the field, and as one anlger
commented, it was rare to look over at Larry without seeing him playing a
fish. During the event, it was clear that Larry was on his way to a
victory, but what anlgers couldn't see was the bag of fish Barry Croke was
amassin at the far end peg. Barry Croke had just come from a big win at
Greenway Park the previous weekend, which was clearly only a warmup to his
56.93 kg (125.25 lbs) preformance on this day. Barry commented later that
it was single kernels of corn, fished on Drennan tackle that helped him
catch his fish.
Niagara Fishing Tours Agency team member - Jeff Turner took third place
with a diverse assortment of fish weighin in at 33.11 kg, which he caught
using maggots fished on Kamasan Specimen hooks.
The whole event was a win-win situation as STS competitors not only had a
great day of fishing, but in efforts to help the Marsh all the carp that
were caught (a total of 122 fish), were transferred from Hillman Marsh,
over the dike, and into Lake Erie waters. It is hoped that the regular
transfer of carp can help clear the water and encourage the growth aquatic
marsh plants. All native fish species were returned, unharmed, back to
the marsh.
Lonnie King took the Spiderline Big-Fish honours with a 6.85 kg carp, which
he landed using a 20 foot telescopic pole while fishing for bullheads.
Jeff Turner, who was stationed right beside King, witnessed the big fish
battle. 'I was actually bracing myself in anticipation of the pole
exploding'. Turner commented later, as the line and rod were literally
humming while battleing the big fish. King had fitted the pole with 12 lb
Spiderline Monofilament and a #8 Kamasan Specimen hook just in case of such
an emergency, but acknowledged his good fortune in that the fish turned at
the very brink of a tackle explosion.
As the third and final qualifier for the Southern Ontario Division, the
finalists that will move on to this year's year-end invitational will
include, Larry Jones, Allen Leeson, Lonnie King and Barry Croke.
Special Thanks - to the Essex Region Conservation Authority for allowing
STS competitors fish at the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area and for
providing such a beautiful setting for fishing, birdwatching and general
nature appreciation.
