STS UPDATE - Another Tough Day on the Water!
It was anticipated that Hamilton Harbour would set new records - and it
did! For those familiar with this body of water, it is well recognized as
an incredibly productive fishery, that teams with sheepshead, catfish and
monster carp, but contrary to predictions, it did not set new records for
biggest fish or biggest overall weights -- rather it re-inforced how
unpredictable the sport of fishing can be, as over 80 percent of the field
were completely shut out. In fact only 2 fish were caught among the entire
field.
John Firstenhaupt, a member of the First Fishing Specialist Team
and regular STS competitor, won the event with a 5.29 kg (11.64 lbs) carp
which he caught during the second hour of competition. This was John's
first STS victory and a great testiment to the line of rods and other carp
fishing accessories his tackle company carries.
Andrzej Tyminiewski alsocaught a carp of 4.16 kg (9.15 lbs) with two hours left in the event.
There were few explanations for the incredibly tough conditions, as anglers
prefishing for the tournament found large numbers of carp and channel
catfish actively feeding in the shallows up to and including the day before
the competition. This unprecidented turn of events caused some major
shifts in the overall Divisional Standings which now finds Thomas Kutchy,
John Firstenhaupt, Fritz Vatter and Andrzej Tyminiewski on their way to the
year-end Invitational.
The Central Ontario Division was by far the most challenging division of
the 2000 STS Series. The big weights at the Credit River Qualifier left
most anglers unprepared for Mimico, where a handful of shiners is all it
took for a third place finish. The Hamilton Harbour tournament dealt a
double blow, as even minnows were in short supply. But such is tournament
fishing, and it will be valuable lessons like those learned this season
that will further hone the skills and versatility of STS competitors.
Special Thanks - to Canada Centre for Inland Waters for allowing
competitors use of the property.
Upcoming Events - There is only one more qualifying event left in the 2000
STS Series, which will be held on the Erie Canal in New York on August 19,
2000. The final Invitational will be held on September 2 & 3, at Desy's
fishing perserve. Pickup matches will also be run and open to the public
on one of Desy's fully stocked ponds. Pickup matches run from 8:00 to 1:00
p.m. and cost $20.00 to enter. Invitational Weigh-in will be held at 2:00
p.m. For directions to Desy's check the website or call Desy's Fishing
Preserve at 905-892-8990.
