    Lake Weiss Fishing Report

    DATE: 8-9-00
    LAKE LEVEL: 561.4
    NORMAL POOL : 564.0
    SURFACE TEMP: 94.3
    WATER CLARITY: Normal

CRAPPIE: No crappie are being caught at this time.  (Day or night)
There is nothing for certain in fishing,  but over the past 12 to 15 years
crappie start to bite here the first or second week in September.  Good
enough to recommend that somebody come fishing.

I try to be honest as possible in giving good and accurate information,  we have all driven5,6,7 hours to arrive to some very terrible fishing,  after someone at a
marina says "come on".  Then you come in after the first days
fishing, FISHLESS.  And the answer you get ,is you should have been here
yesterday.  We do not want to give out that kind of information.

The weather has been so hot here and so dry, fishing is not normal.  I can't
look in my crystal ball and tell you that it will be good in
September.  But, I would bet my last dollar on it! And if it does as
usual, it will play out about the first or second week of November.  If
this changes, you can bet that I will tell the truth on a weekly basis or
a daily basis if necessary.  It is 110*F in the shade here. Only a Martian
would want to fish on days like this,( or a die-hard bass fisherman that
    just can't stand not going).

BASS: Bass fishing is slow. What bass are being caught are 3-5ft of
water chasing live shad. The best I can tell these are schooling type
bass. The larger fish are laying off until dark.  We had 100 boat
tournament here last Saturday and 15lbs. won it. (Which surprised me).
The winning boat,  Carolina rig in shallow water (3-5ft).

One of my partners fished the tournament, and I consider him to be as good as a
bass fisherman that there is on this lake. Harry did what I would have
done, he concentrated on deep drops and humps throwing crank baits and
spinner baits hoping for the big bite.  It never came.  Harry did weigh-in 5
fish,  he stayed with the deep water all day.  If you bass fish very much,
or tournament fish very much, you have to have a good fish to win.  About
the time you think you got these "cotton pickers" figured out,  they will
make you real humble.50% of the boats in that tournament had no fish.

BREAM: Bream fishing is very slow.

STRIPE: Stripe fishing has ground to a screeching halt.  I broke down
and broke out the mosquito spray, and tried several night fishing hot
spots that I know about myself and that I know hold fish.  I marked fish
on the depth finder, caught 2 good fish in 6 hours.  Lost 2 gallons of
blood,  and decide the air conditioning sounded awful good.

Traditionally here,  stripe fishing picks up about the same time that crappie fish picks
up with the cooler water, about the first or second week of
September.  However, with the EL-whatever in the pacific, who knows??  But, I
will check them and let you know what I find.  As with crappie, even though
you don't hire me, I will be glad to tell you where I am catching them
and what I am catching them on  .If I am not here, Cheryl can give you more
    information than I can anyway!!

CATFISH: As you catfish fisherman know, the dark nights of August are
when you get the good-ones.  Everything other than catfish seems to be
pretty slow, jug fishermen and night fishermen, limb lines and trot lines
are producing large quantities of this tasty fish.  Cut shad seems to work
    the best.

WHITE BASS: I have still not seen them in the jumps as of yet.  I don't
know if it is the low water or the heat.  I know they are there and
millions of them.  I believe if you get up on top of sandbars early in the
morning and late in the evening and throw some rooster tails at they or
troll some rooster tails, you might be able to catch them.

Sorry about the late report.  Took 2 weeks off to go fishing in Florida
and it is not any better there!  (Fresh water wise).
