By William R. Smith

I just got done reading your article on the Bowfin and would like to know more about them.

About a year ago I was fishing with my father on a old swamp in Prince George county Virginia. He hooked into what he thought was a bass but when it sounded he got really mad and began to fight it. What he pulled out of the water amazed me.

The bowfin came out of the water like a shark attacking a piece of cut bait. his friend managed to get the fish in the net as much as he could. Half of the fish was out of the net the other half was in it. It was thrashing around so much it ended up falling back into the water. In the end it had sliced through 18lb test, part of the net, and had left teeth marks in the popper. (he was using a top water pop bait)

Any way is there a way to specifically target them like you would another species of fish?

In regards to your story about "planking" the bowfin in Virginia we do this all the time with Shad.
