Lake of the Woods fishing report from Witch Bay Camp
    From: Walleyewillie@centuryinter.net (Phil Rolfe)

Well opener finally arrived this last Saturday. Water temperatures were in the mid 50's in Witch Bay and low 50's in the main lake. Clearly in mid post spawn. Weather was sunny and in the sixties. Couldn't ask for more.

Walleyes were biting good in Witch Bay. Depths went from 8-20', with a lot of the population in the 12' area. Jigging with worms worked well, as did bouncers with spinners tipped with a crawler. The hot blade seemed to be hammered copper in # 4 colorado. Fish seemed to be scattered along the shorelines, keying on the points and inside turns worked well.

Smallmouth bass action was good. The Hayfield area was holding good fish, as was the Clam island complex. Good size was available, the fish were aggressive. Jerk baits such as the Husky Jerk in a variety of colors worked well. Silver was a top color choice. The bass were spitting up what appeared to be shiners.

This morning a cold front arrrived and it seemed to slow the action on bass somewhat. However, the fish still could be had, just not in the numbers of the last two days. The walleye bite was good, but they seemed to be confined to certain areas. Mike McDonald had a 27 and ½ incher which was released. Biggest so far. But lots of 20-25" fish caught.

Season is off to a good start. Stay tuned.
