Ledgebusters on Lake Eufaula

Dateline 5/15/00

I went to Eufaula to fish with Jackie Thompson, and had a good day. He has been guiding there for 32 years and his knowledge of the lake shows. Even better, he is a great guide, explaining what is going on and why we fished each place. He tries to teach as well as put you on fish.

I caught two nice bass, one on a Rebel Jumpin Minnow DonnieP from chat sent me. He told me what a great bait they are, and when I could not find one he sent me one of his! Pictures of me holding the bass I caught and of me taking pictures of Jackie holding them for a Georgia Outdoor News article are on the bragging board.

Jackie showed me how to fish Ledgebuster Spinnerbaits - a lure he helped develop. It is a big, heavy spinnerbait made for fishing deep. He and Jack Tibbs developed it and they call fishing with it "deep cranking." It is a great way to fish a spinnerbait deep, and I caught a bass that weighed just under 4 pounds on it.

Jackie also let me use one of his rods, an All-Pro rod made for spinnerbaits. I really liked it - it is the best feeling rod for that kind of fishing I have used. I especially liked the pistol grip. I need to replace my two Lightning Rods that I use for spinnerbaits and buzz baits, and that will be high on my list. You can order a catalog and check out some of their rods on their site.

I stayed at Lakepoint Resort on the Alabama side of Eufaula and had a nice room with a great view of the sun setting over the lake. We put in at the big parking lot where you can launch four or five boats at a time, making it a popular place for tournaments. They also have cabins and a good campground. It is a super place to spend some time on a fishing trip or just visiting the area.

Call Jackie to set up a trip or get more info about their lures and All-Pro Rods at 334-616-6959.

Caught any nice bass lately? Tell me about them. Do you have any comments to offer? You can also post information about it for others on my message board - you must register to post but can read the board as a guest. Also, if you have thoughts you want to share about this topic, let me know about it at fishing.guide@about.com. for a "Fishtale" or discuss it in the chat room on every night at 8:00 ET. Tell others what you like.
