Clip, Split Ring or Swivel for Fishing?

When to use clips, split rings and swivels.

By Ronnie Garrison, About.com

Heavy line and snaps or snap swivels do not go together. I will us a small snap when fishing crankbaits on light line - 10 pound test or less. They help give more movement and allow me to change baits fast.

On all crankbaits and topwater plugs I make sure I have a split ring on it. They are very strong and allow the plug to move. Most crankbaits come with one already attached, but I have a supply of different split rings in my tacklebox and also carry a pair of split ring pliers. They make adding split rings to plugs fairly easy, and I can also change hooks using them.

I never use swivels at a bait. I will use one up the line when fishing a Fluke or other soft jerk bait, or on a Carolina rig, but I don’t like extra hardware at the bait.

A loop knot is a good way around extra hardware, but I have not learned to tie one good enough to have confidence in it. So I use the spit ring or snap.

Pick a way to attach your lures that works best for you. Make sure it is one that will not lose fish!
