Fishing for Cats - Not Fish

Samuel Carnes catches the wrong kind of cat

by Samuel Carnes:

Earlier this afternoon I was reading some of the articles on the fishtales library . I read about PETA's ridiculous declaration of war on sport fishermen. I think these people are ridiculous and they have only inspired me to go out and buy a PETA shirt People Eating Tasty Animals that is.

Anyway, I no sooner got done reading the article about how they intend to push there campaign against fishermen by putting up a billboard with a dog with a fishhook in its mouth. I felt inspired to go out and try a few casts in the Carnes reservoir.

My line was unequipped having broken it on a snag last trip so I got out my stool on the front porch and tied on a new No.8 hook. A couple of my parents cats came over to get some attention when one of them caught sight of my line he immediately had to have a go at it. The first swipe he caught his paw on the hook.

Before I could get to him he bent his head down pulled out the hook and got it lodged in his gum. Hurt and startled he started to run dragging my Berkley Cherrywood and Quantum lightweight with him this only dug the hook in deeper.

I caught the cat and removed the hook from the swivel. It being later Saturday afternoon I knew the services of a vet were not going to be available until Monday morning so rather than wreck the cats whole weekend by making him run around with a hook in his mouth I decided to perform surgery.

No pain killers nothing but a pair of good old needlenose pliers - PETA would have my ass if they knew. I enlisted the help of my dad who had just got off work knowing that I would never be able to hold down and remove a fishhook from an adult cat's mouth alone.

Even still my efforts proved insufficient to hold the cat down though I did manage to tire him out enough for my second plan to work. I spied a couple of my gym dufflebags lying on the floor observing that a cat zipped up in a dufflebag wouldn’t be able to scratch I proceeded to stuff the cat into the bag.

When he was all the way in with the bag zipped up around his neck I managed to hold his mouth open while my dad got a good grip with the pliers and yanked the hook out. Worked like a charm. The cat not only survived but only a few hours later seemed to be none the worse for his injury.

So take that PETA and anyone considering fishing for cats keep it to catfish they don't have any claws. Please publish this in fishtales the readers should get a kick.
