Landing a Bighead Carp

Landing the Big Head Carp

Bigmouth Carp - 36 Inches Long

That is an 18 inch keeper board laying beside the carp - it was twice that long.

Ronnie Garrison
I got the fish to the surface and took a picture of it. I was finally able to get my hand in its gills and land it - and realized it was a bighead carp. I weighed it on my DeLiar and it showed 21 pounds. Laying it on the back deck of my boat, I put my 18 inch keeper board beside it - the fish was twice as long as the board.

These carp look weired with the eyes on the lower half of the head, and you can see why they were called "bighead." They are not native to the US but were released into the Mississippi River drainage after being brought to the US as a food fish.

The International Game Fish Association lists a 61 pound 15 ounce bighead carp caught in old Hickory Lake in Tennesses in 2002 as the world record, but a 73 pound, 8 ounce bighead was caught at Reelfoot Lake in 2003.

Bighead carp jump when scared, often several feet out of the water. Boat motors scare them. There are stories that boaters have been injured and killed when bighead carp jumped up and hit them as they ran down the lake.
