Buying A Fishing Boat

When To Buy A Boat

By , About.com Guide

It is said the two happiest days in a boat owner’s life are the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it. I have had a lot of happy days in my boat owning life, having bought seven bass boats and sold six of them since 1974.

A couple of years ago I had two bass boats having bought a new one and not sold the old one. At the time I also had a 12 foot jon boat on each of my two ponds and a 14 fiberglass boat I was working on to make a good boat for Juliette. Add in the jon boat with the split bottom that I was thinking about fixing and Linda told me I was going to have to get a dealer’s license if I got any more.

Although I wanted a good jon boat with a small motor for fishing High Falls, I waited until I sold one of the bass boats to buy another boat. Winter is a good time to buy a boat but not a lot are for sale. I got a Boat Trader and found one suitable boat in it. There was another one at Spalding Pawn that was what I was looking for so I tried both.

The boat at Spalding Pawn had a 9.9 horsepower motor and ran good, cranking the third time I pulled the rope. The boat in the Trader had an 8 horsepower motor and also ran good. Both motors were on the same model boat and had similar equipment. Both were similar prices but the one in the Trader was newer, so I bought it last Saturday.

I am looking forward to fishing High Falls and Indian Springs out of my new boat. It is not quite as stable as my big bass boat but I don’t think I will fall out if I am a little careful.

If you are interested in a new fishing boat, now is a good time to look. The one at Spalding Pawn might still be for sale. As soon as spring arrives many more people will be looking for boats and they will be harder to find and more expensive. Get one now and work on it and have it ready to go on these nice warm days!
