There are some ways for you tough tournament fisherman to get to the fish and get the big bites. It does however take some work and time on the water.
The first thing you need to do is to risk getting your motor clogged up in the deep grass. To win a fall tournament on Guntersville you need to be trimming up your big motor and cutting paths back in the grass to the icky, slimy, nasty grass areas in a foot of water. With the baitfish pushed into the thick grass so are the big bass, and the only way to get back there is to take your big motor and cut a path to them. When you have done this and found those monster bass hitting your "rat," then you need to take and make sure your path is cut deep enough to get you to the thick grass the day of the tournament. You don't want to be wasting time cutting paths during your limited fishing time during the tournament.
The next thing is to be able to work around within 100 yards or so of where you have cut your path and found those fish quietly, and still be able to catch those monsters. Here is where the work comes in. You need to have a push pole, light enough to handle and strong enough to allow you to work yourself around the thick grass. Your trolling motor is just not quiet enough and generally gets too clogged up to quietly work the area you need to fish. The big catches are hard to get to, but you can compete if you're willing to risk some hard work to catch them.
