When the elite make a change to the fishing industry, it remains a secret for a while but word gets out and when it does we all benefit. This time it’s the spooning presentation that has made the headlines. Kelly Jordan broke the news on his secret after he won the match play event a few years ago, weighing in some ridiculous weight in only some 15 minutes of fishing.

He took some big 1 oz. to 1 1/4 oz. spoons to once again offer some new ways and trends to change bass fishing. The key to this presentation as compared to conventional jigging spoons is making long casts and working the spoon back to you with long upward sweeping retrieves. At the same time you keep a tight enough line to feel the bite. This allows the spoon to swing back and forth in flashy movements back to the bottom and get reaction bites that other baits can’t offer. It works at a variety of depths.

The downside of this is the big heavy spoons are expensive. When you are fishing over deep wood, you can see money go out the window as they have big hooks and get stuck into wood very easy. I try to keep a heavy retrieve dog in my boat so I have a chance of releasing the spoon with the dog by bouncing it against the hooks on the bottom.

Even with this I lose several spoons on every fishing trip. One of the big upsides for me as a guide is the spoons seem to catch just about every species of fish in the lake. We have boated everything from catfish, drum, stripers, and spotted bass to largemouth and had a blast doing it.

The point being when its tough out there and your looking for a bite, spooning is a technique that can turn a bad day around.

Come fish with me I have days available to fish with you. Let me share this technique with you!
