Brian Knippers' Bass Fishing Tips

How To Catch Bass

By Ronnie Garrison, About.com

Brian Knippers has been catching some nice bass this summer. He offers the following tips to fellow fishermen.

  • Every cast you take is another chance at landing a 10lb’er

That’s what most guys don’t realize. A big part of catching large fish is spending a lot of time on the water. You can read every book on fishing in the world, and granted, it will help you when you get out on the water. However, if you only get out on the water 4-5 times a year you’ll never be able to master a technique the same way as someone who has endless hours of sweat equity in practice!

I realize if you have a big family and a lot of responsibility you don’t have time to go fishing every night. That’s why I’m single and I have a lot of friends that love to fish.

  • Next time you go fishing try a lure you don’t normally use

Every fisherman has something in his tackle box that sits there and rarely gets use. Try something that feels foreign to you whether it’s a big top water torpedo or a bright orange bomber and stick with it all day.

  • Fish a Zoom Horny Toad

I’ve been having a lot of luck with Zoom Horny Toads lately. I’m not sure if you like to fish the frog, but they work awesome if your patient with em’. I texas rig the frog with no weight and bring em’ in real slow on the surface. Every now and then I stop reeling and let em’ sink down, then lift my tip up real slow and start reeling again.

I’ve fished hundreds of rubber frogs throughout my life and Zoom Horny Toads are the best rubber frog I’ve ever tried. If you can find a thick cluster of lily pads you can bring em’ across the top of the lilies real slow and they’ll come right up and hammer em’.

  • Never fish a bass tournament on a body of water you’ve never fished before

In my first tournament recently by the time we figured out where the fish were and what they were eating the tournament was over!! If I’d fished Milton Three Ponds for 5 hours the week of the tourney I would’ve known exactly what to use and what depth they were holding in.

Try out Brian's tips and then send in some of your own. Let me know how you do.
