Bassfan.com Rookie Race Update

Wolak Good, But Lane Still Better

By , About.com Guide

Pennsylvania's Dave Wolak was the best rookie on the Bassmaster Tour this year. At last week's Table Rock Bassmaster, he finished 10th – his best finish this season in a pressure-packed event (he had an outside shot at winning Bassmaster Angler of the Year) on a tough lake.

The net result of his outstanding rookie season – he finished 13th, 12th and 10th in the last three events, and had only one bad finish all year – is that he finished 4th in the BASS points and is now 2nd in the cross-tour BassFan Rookie of the Year (ROY) Race.

But even with that great season, he's still 13 points out of 1st in the ROY Race. He has a shot to win ROY, but the guy above him – current FLW points leader Bobby Lane – will have to stumble at least once. Possible? Yes. Likely? At this point no one would bet against Lane.

Next week Lane and the other FLW Tour rookies fish Beaver Lake, a lake that has humbled more than a few top pros.

As the 2005 Bassmaster Tour season is now over, here are the Bassmaster rookies who finished in the Top 10 in ROY points – though they can still be knocked out of those slots by FLW Tour rookies, who have half their season (three events) left to fish:

3. Preston Clark – Palatka, Florida 7. Greg Gutierrez – Red Bluff, California 8. Russ Lane – Prattville, Alabama 9. Terry Butcher -- Talala, Oklahoma 10. Cliff Pace – Petal, Mississippi
