Byron Velvick has won the U.S. Open bass fishing tournament on Lake Mead twice back in the 1990s. He is a bachelor but has been married once in the past. He fishes a lot and competes on the bass fishing trails out west.
A press release from ABC states he is an outdoorsman since "he's also a true outdoorsman and enjoys biking and hiking and watching the Weather Channel." Now to the folks at ABC watching the Weather Channel may make you an outdoorsman. I wonder if watching some TV channels make you a true bachelor?
Winning the U.S. Open is a pretty big deal. It is one of the biggest tournaments out west each year and most of the name pros fish it each year. Russ Bassdozer with Yamamoto Baits just put out an interesting interview with this year's winner, Aaron Martens. When Russ lists the top fishermen in the U.S. Open he does not mention Velvick so I wonder if he competed this year.
Velvick won the Open in 1991 and 1996, according to ABC, and has been a professional bass fisherman for 13 years. I guess he turned pro when he won his first Open.
Byron won out over the other competing "Bachelors" on the TV show, being chosen by the women he will date. He will eventually choose one of these women and ask her to marry him, as I understand the program. I have never watched it, and neither had he, according to ABC in a press release about The Bachelor TV show.
It will be interesting to see how much Byron's fishing is emphasized in this Bachelor show.
