Second Place Smallmouth Bass

These two smallmouth helped me win second place in the NWC

The 2004 North Woods Classic was held on Boom Lake in Rhinelander, Wisconsin on September 10 and 11. The fishing was tough, with 7 of the 20 fishermen not bringing in a keeper either day. It took 6 bass weighing just under 12 pounds to win and I finished second with five weighing about 8.5 pounds.

Each fall a group of us the visit the a bass fishing newsgroup get together to fish, talk, eat, have a few beers and generally have a good time. We also have a small tournament to see if we can catch any bass. The fishing is usually pretty tough, but this year there were more bass caught than ever before.

On the first day while fishing with Fritz I landed three keepers, a largemouth on a Senko in shallow water, a smallmouth on a 4 inch Zoom worm on a log crib in 15 feet of water and a bigger smallmouth on a tube in a grassbed. The second day I landed a smallmouth and a largemouth, both on Senkos in shallow water.

Our host, Steve Huber and his wife Janet, as always made us welcome and put on a great event. Steve is a muskie guide in Rhinelander when not working as an EMT and working on his new outdoor TV show Outdoor Frontiers. Janet keeps it all together, from recording the weight at the weigh-in to cooking to keeping us all laughing.

The NWC is great fun for all of us that go.
