The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Spinning Reels for Fishing

Spinning Reels Pluses and Minuses

By , About.com Guide

Spinning reels are very popular and work better than other kinds of fishing reels for some kinds of fishing.

The Good

  • Easy to use - they are often the first reels kids learn to use
  • Inexpensive - they cost less than some other kinds of reels
  • Will cast very light lures - the only kind of reel that works better than spinning for light lures is a fly rod and reel
  • Easy to adjust drag, even when fighting a fish, if the reel has a rear drag system
  • Can back reel while fighting a fish

The Bad

  • Must use fairly light line - heavy line does not work well on most spinning reels
  • Will twist your line if you flip the bail by turning the reel handle or reel against the drag
  • Easy to get loops in your line, especially if you flip the bail using the reel handle
  • Harder to spool line, you can twist the line putting it on the reel unless you do it right

The Ugly

  • If you get a loop in your line, on the next cast it will go out and really tangle up your line - you often have to get out the knife to fix it.
  • If you have very big hands some smaller reels will bust your knuckles with the bail as you reel, making them unusable for you

Spinning reels deserve a place in your arsenel of fishing gear. Use them where they shine and use them correctly and they will serve you well.
