The Good
- Easy to use - they are often the first reels kids learn to use
- Inexpensive - they cost less than some other kinds of reels
- Will cast very light lures - the only kind of reel that works better than spinning for light lures is a fly rod and reel
- Easy to adjust drag, even when fighting a fish, if the reel has a rear drag system
- Can back reel while fighting a fish
The Bad
- Must use fairly light line - heavy line does not work well on most spinning reels
- Will twist your line if you flip the bail by turning the reel handle or reel against the drag
- Easy to get loops in your line, especially if you flip the bail using the reel handle
- Harder to spool line, you can twist the line putting it on the reel unless you do it right
The Ugly
- If you get a loop in your line, on the next cast it will go out and really tangle up your line - you often have to get out the knife to fix it.
- If you have very big hands some smaller reels will bust your knuckles with the bail as you reel, making them unusable for you
Spinning reels deserve a place in your arsenel of fishing gear. Use them where they shine and use them correctly and they will serve you well.
