How do you fish a cypress tree?

Cypress trees grow in the water in many southern lakes and rivers. Bass and other game fish love to hang around them. If you have a plan on how to fish the cypress trees you will catch more fish. This will work on any tree or other similar cover in shallow water.

  • Approach the tree quietly
  • Be as quiet as possible when approaching the cypress tree. Fish in shallow water are often spooky and will leave if you bump something in the boat, make waves rocking the boat or have your trolling motor on high. Many fishermen even turn off their depthfinders to stop the sound the tranducer makes.

  • Make as long a cast to the cyperss tree as possible
  • Stay as far back from the cyprss tree and make as long a cast as you can make efficiently. You want your lure to hit the water very quietly so get close enough to make an efficent cast, but as far back as you can.

  • Hit the tree trunk
  • When fishing a jig and pig or plastic worm it is often best to hit the trunk of the tree and let the bait slide quietly into the water. This is more natural and gets your bait right beside the trunk of the tree.

  • Work your bait slowly
  • Fish very slowly around the base of the tree, and make multiple casts to hit it at different angles. Don't move your bait away from the strike zone of the fish fast, give them time to eat your bait.

  • Feel for the root ball
  • Cypress trees, especially the older, bigger trees, have a donot or ring of roots around the base of the tree. Fish often hold just inside, just outside or in this ring of roots, so make sure you work your bait out and through them.

  • Isolated trees are best
  • Clumps of trees will hold bass and other game fish but isolated trees will often hold the biggest fish. It takes longer to fsih isolated trees but is well worth the time.
