Rainy Lake Report
International Angling
Adventures
The lake is frozen right now, but this spring the big fish will be right where we found them last fall. The Rainy River is starting to thaw and I saw a boat out fishing today in the open water just west of International Falls. However, you will need to drag a small boat in because snow and ice will remain at the access points for some time. Contact us for updated information.
Fishing remains fair on Rainy Lake. Sand Bay continues to put out manysmall and a few large walleyes everyday for most parties. Areas to the east of Sand Bay are putting out some nice walleyes and northern pike. The same deep reefs that produce in the summer are working now. Try jigging Rapalas or a Northland jig with a live minnow.
Ice roads are in good shape. Some slush due to the recent heavy snows. Stop by a local bait store and buy an ice pass to support the plowing. Anglers that are taking snowmobiles to go find untouched fishing spots are doing well. Big crappies have been hitting all year. We were happy to have Dave Genz up here this year. He went after the big crappies Rainy is famous for (14 to16"). Northwest Bay, Red Gut Bay, and Black Sturgeon are your best bets.
Big northern pike are being caught in many of the bays and narrows on the lake. Also, can be found with the walleyes on the reefs. If you go out for a cross country adventure, use caution. Some narrows and points have dangerous ice due to the current.
Book your trip now on the waters rated as some of the best by the InFisherman and many others.
