Following are the State Farm/BassFan.com World Rankings as updated after
last week's Toledo Bend BASSMASTER. The rankings were not updated after
the Atchafalaya Basin FLW, but this edition does include results from that
tournament.
In this edition of the rankings, there will be some cases of substantial
movement. That's due to two factors:<br> > Two tournaments' worth of "new"
data are being accounted for at once<br> > The formula is slightly
different __________
Slight Formula Change
The delay in posting this edition of the rankings was the result of the
conversion of all tour pro tournament data over to a new, more-agile
database program. This was necessary for several reasons, including the
expanded BASSMASTER Tour schedule and the potential for the tour schedules
to change even more in the future.
The new software allows the formula to be more accurate in one principle
way. That is, formerly all "year 2" (older) tournaments in the 2-years of
rolling data used in the rankings were weighted half as much as
current-year data when determining a pro's world ranking points. Now the
weight of each tournament drops off gradually on a sliding scale. This has
had the following effects:
> Some shifting in the rankings. Some pros who had been "held down" under
> the old weighting system have gone up, and vice versa. A notable example
> of the former is David Wharton, who is now ranked 16th (only partly
> because of his win at Toledo Bend). Some similar shifting could occur in
> future editions of the rankings.
> Some shifting also occurs because of how second-year pros are now
> handled. To be ranked, a tour pro must have 2 years of tour-level data.
> Technically that means any pro with less than 2 years on one or both
> tours wouldn't be ranked at all. But previously, pros like Frank Scalish
> and J.T. Kenney, who are now in their second years, were ranked, some
> fairly high. Now that's no longer the case. But instead of completely
> wiping second-year pros from the slate, the new formula allows them to
> get some "credit" for their finishes so far. Most of these
> better-performing second-year pros are now stacked near the bottom of
> the Top 200. When they start their third season, they will be handled
> like anyone else.
> Point margins are tighter and should tighten up more over time, but are
> proportionately the same as before.
General things to bear in mind about the rankings:
> Even with the new sliding scale, it sometimes takes a while for a string
> of bad finishes to catch up with an angler, especially one who has
> fished well for a while. A good example is Rick Clunn, who didn't move
> much last year but has since fallen in the rankings.
> League championships are worth more than regular-season tournaments. So
> anglers who qualify for a championship get the opportunity to earn more
> points that are also weighted more.
> A good example of both of the above is Aaron Martens. He has fished
> poorly this year, but those finishes haven't caught up with him yet in
> the rankings -- partly because he had a 2nd at the 2002 Classic and a
> 6th at the 2002 FLW Championship.
