Lake Weiss Fishing Report

DATE: 10-16-02
LAKE LEVEL: 561.0( Al. Power full of prune juice)
NORMAL FULL POOL: 564.0
SURFACE TEMP: mid 70's and dropping
WATER CLARITY: Great

CRAPPIE: Large numbers of crappie are still being caught. Not a lot of keepers. Catch 100 and you may have 15-20, but a lot of fun. For some reason artificial is working better than live bait. Majority of fish being taken around and under the docks. The crappie have been deep early, but shallow up later in the day. And when I say shallow, I mean shallow. 1 1/2 - 2 foot.
Whit has never been a great color on this lake but for some reason, which only the fish could explain, red/blue/white has been catching 2 to 1.

About 2/3 of the dock owners on Weiss have brush piles around their docks and they try to keep it a secret but if you will look where their rod holders are on the dock or where their chairs are it is really a no brainer to find the brush piles. If you are going to fish a brush pile and don't have a weedless jigs you can tie on a float. We have a bad cold front coming thru that will slow them down a bit but it will not stop them. Don't forget: Crappie will not go down for a bait, he will only come up.

BASS: Bass patterns have changed a little bit. They are still on points and drops. Shad Rap has come out with a new bait. It is a broken back and they are wearing them out on it. The bass were schooled up in shallow, shallow water. They are still reasonably shallow but they seem to be pulling back to the deeper water. Take your map and you can find a lot of places to fish. Have a game plan before you get here instead of just beating the banks to death.

WHITE BASS: White bass should be pretty easy to take now. A lot of jumps around the lake. If they are not in the jumps, troll for them like you would crappie, but they will be shallow no matter what the water depth.

STRIPE: Don't have a clue. They are catching a lot of them in the cut going to Powerhouse with the white bass but there is no size to them. Won't be long and the birds will be back and it will be a no brainer.

CATFISH: They are catching some really nice catfish on the old river channel edge. Smaller ones around the banks. Cut shad is the best bait but about anything will work.

The lake is clear enough now that we need you bow fishermen out there to get rid of some of these carp and gar fish. Works best at night with a spotlight. The lake is low and you need to watch what you are doing. No problem from the big bridge down but big bridge up is a horse of a different color.

Sincerely,  Steve
