Lake Weiss Fishing Report
DATE: 06-03-02
LAKE LEVEL: 563.3
NORMAL FULL POOL: 564.0
SURFACE TEMP: 88.3 am - 91.6 pm
WATER CLARITY: Good
CRAPPIE: Slow, the only crappie that are being taken are at night under lights around
bridges. Spring & Cowan Creek bridges are always good spots.
BASS: Still biting strong. Rocky points, seawalls, and grass beds adjacent to deep
water. Still catching spots on humps. Buzz bait early, spinner baits. When the sun comes up a little higher, Carolina rigs with French Fry
worms. Pumpkin seed seems to be the color.
STRIPE: Fished most of the day today. I didn't stay in one place for very long.
Caught stripe in Powerhouse 6-7 feet deep in 10-12 foot of water around humps and brushpiles using live shad. Moved up to the mouth of Yellow Creek where it drops into the Coosa River. Caught stripe suspended 14-18 feet deep in 25 feet of
water. Moved out to Sand Valley, fished the hump between the noses. A few fish out there. Cheryl and I moved up to the curve just before the big bridge. Marked fish but didn't fish for them. I know they were stripe because they were 14-18 feet deep in 35-40 feet of water. Went through James Branch just where she drops off into the old
river. Marked several and caught one. Moved on down to the Old Cotton Gin. Made a slow drift for about 100 yds and caught 2 great
fish. Marked a LOT of fish but it was 3 pm in the afternoon and we stopped as they seemed to be getting a little bit locked
jawed. I am sure you can catch stripe in the Cave Hole but it is usually so crowded that I just do not go there.
There are generally stripe hanging out on the shelf between the islands in Little River. Also did not go there but they have been there for years at this time of year. Butch & Harry located some stripe in Yellow Creek just passed Turkey Knob, there is an old roadbed there and several brush piles. I haven't tried Riverside any further up than James Branch but I am going to. Over the years it has been awful good fishing on the river channel on the left side coming out of Riverside, turn left and go up to the big bend.
If anybody finds anymore, please let me know, lets don't be a one way street. It cost me $40-$50 just to go look and a hard long day of fishing.
TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY THAT I HAVE TRIED MY CSI ALS-20 BAIT TANK. OVER THE YEARS I HAVE BOUGHT BAIT TANKS FROM $75.00 TO $700.00. I HAVE EVEN MADE A COUPLE OF MY OWN PERSONAL
DESIGN. NONE OF THEM WERE WORTH 2 CENTS WHEN THE SURFACE TEMPS GOT UP TO 90
DEGREES. IN THE PAST, I COULD KEEP 15-20 SHAD ALIVE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS, BUT THEY STARTED GOING DOWNHILL JUST AS SOON AS I PUT THEM IN THE
TANK. THE ENGINEERS AT CSI TOLD ME I COULD KEEP 100 SHAD ALIVE FOR 3 DAYS IN 90+ DEGREE
HEAT. I AM OLD AND HARDHEADED. AND I HAVE HAD SMOKE BLOWED UP MY SHIRTTAIL ALOT.
SO TODAY CHERYL AND I TOOK THE OWNERS MANUAL AND FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE
LETTER. I HAD 150-175 SHAD IN THE TANK. WE BROUGHT THE WATER TEMP DOWN EXACTLY LIKE THE OWNERS MANUAL TO THE
DEGREE. ADDED THE CHEMICALS RECOMMENDED. WHEN WE STOPPED AT 7:30 PM AND RELEASED THE LIVE SHAD, THEY WERE IN BETTER SHAPE THAN THEY WERE WHEN WE CAUGHT THEM AT
DAYBREAK. THIS SHAD TANK IS INSULATED. THIS TANK HAS 5 SEPARATE FILTERS AND
CHEMICALS. IT IS OF FIBERGLASS CONSTRUCTION WITH A FULL INCH OF
INSULATION. IT COMES WITH STAINLESS STEAL HINGES AND LIDS THAT ARE MOUNTED TO
SEAL. (NO MORE SHAD BATHS GOING DOWN THE LAKE IN ROUGH WATER)
WE ONLY HAD TO ADD ADDITIONAL ICE IN THE LATE AFTERNOON TO KEEP THE WATER TEMP AT RECOMMENDED
TEMP. THIS TANK IS BUILT SO STRONG THAT YOU COULD KICK IT OUT OF A PICK-UP TRUCK GOING 70 MPH AND IT WON'T DO ANYTHING BUT SCRATCH IT UP. TRUE, THE PRODUCT IS EXPENSIVE BUT IT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN PASS DOWN TO YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS. IT EVEN COMES WITH A SERIAL NUMBER AND YOUR NAME ON A PLATE IN STAINLESS
STEAL .IF YOU THINK THAT JUST ADDING SHAD SAVE AND SALT TO KEEP SHAD ALIVE YOU WERE OUT THERE FLAPPING WITH
ME .NOT ONLY DOES THIS TANK OXYGENATE THE WATER BUT IT REMOVES ALL SHAD WASTE INCLUDING URINE AND
SCALES. NO MORE RED NOSES AND NO MORE 1/2 LIVE SHAD.
FOR MORE INFORMATION JUST CLICK ON THE INFO ABOUT IT ON OUR HOME PAGE AND IT WILL TAKE YOU TO THEIR PAGE. I HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU!
WHITE BASS: I am pretty sure I marked a lot of white bass in the flat behind the Hawg's Den. They were suspended 3-4 foot
deep. Around mid-month they should show up around Cornwall Furnace in the Chatooga.
CATFISH: Still biting strong around any fish cleaning areas.
All you bow hunters come on down. The carp are suspended under boat docks in Little
River. Best way to get them is at night using a spotlight. Come and get all you can handle and if there is a gar under there get him too.
I have had a lot of email about the Brewers Yeast with Garlic and fleas. It is a great product, will eliminate fleas, and is good for you
animals. Find it in the pet section at Wal-Mart.
If you come down and need help do not hesitate to call. Be glad to help in any way I can.
You family men that might be looking for a bigger place to stay for the whole family, we have several homes for rent on the
water. Most of them have private boat ramps and docks. That goes for you tournament bass fishermen that may be coming in here and would like to stay in a bigger place and save a few
bucks. Give Cheryl a call and she can help set you up.
Lets have a safe and happy summer out there and please be nice to your fellow fishermen. A little courtesy on the water goes a long
way. Give me a buzz if you need me. Thanks,
