Lake Weiss Fishing Report

DATE: 4-12-01
LAKE LEVEL: 563.1
FULL POOL LEVEL: 564.0
SURFACE TEMP: 72*F
WATER CLARITY: Good

CRAPPIE: The surface temp has gone from approx 498F to 72*F in about 4-5 days. The Southern Company has let 3 foot of water out of the lake and then let 4 foot back in.  The crappie do not know what to do and they are VERY spread out.  We have gone from 60 to 70 a day to 25.  Crappie fishing is very tough at this point.  Crappie are being caught in 1-2 foot of water on bubble gum and triple green. The good guides that know the lake are catching 25-30 a day. The average crappie fisherman, that come in from out of town are having a hard way to go of it.  I have seen this problem before in 1993 and do not look for it to improve for the rest of the spring.  If you are coming to Weiss bring a good book and a deck of cards just in case.

BASS: Slow

WHITE BASS: Slow

STRIPE: Hot. Look for the birds. Troll crappie jigs through them when you find the birds.  They seem to prefer bubble gum and orange as of late. I had 30 crappie and 15 Stripe today.

BREAM: Slow

CATFISH: Catfish are doing very well on cut bait.

Sorry that the report is not a glowing one but it is what it is. This has been a VERY unusual spring.  As always we are more than glad to help anyone we can in any way.  We are always at Bay Springs Restaurant for breakfast and will like to meet you.  Come buy and give us a "holler"

Sincerely, Steve, Butch & Harry
