Mark Davis Maintains Overall Lead At Lowe's W.C.F. After Two Days
MONROE, La., Aug. 5, 2000 -- Although he admitted he was "struggling,"
former world bass fishing champion Mark Davis continued as the overall leader Saturday in the Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse World Championship Fishing (W.C.F.) tournament on the Ouachita River.Davis, with a combined total of 78 points in the unique
combination fishing/boating performance event, held a single point lead over Dean Rojas of Arizona, who moved into second after posting the day's best time of 1:09:85 on the boating performance course and weighing in 11 pounds, 9 ounces of fish, the day's heaviest catch.Florida angler Shaw Grigsby held third with 62 points, followed
by 9-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year Roland Martin with 57 and Jay Yelas with 55.Davis, who brought in 15 pounds, 8 ounces of bass from Lake D'Arbonne
the first day, brought in four fish weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces as the pros moved to 5,000 acre Caney Lake south of Monroe on Saturday. Caney Lake, known for its trophy-class largemouth fishing, proved a difficult challenge for the 16 pros who had to contend with heavy boating traffic, high water temperatures, and minimal practice time."I believe most of us were hoping the bass would come to the
surface in schooling action so we could locate them," explained Davis, "but the constant boating activity kept them in deeper water. I really worked hard for the fish I caught, and had to use three different lures to catch them."Rojas, by contrast, was able to catch his fish early when they
were still in shallow water, and in fact, caught several on surface lures. Although his run through the boating course was the fastest of the day, it was still more than a full second slower than his fastest practice time. The final round of fishing will take place on the Ouachita River
between 6 a.m. and noon Sunday, followed by another timed run through the 3,500 foot long boating performance course. Only the two quickest runs through the course will be counted.B.A.S.S. Web site: http://www.bassmaster.com.
