- 'When the going gets tough - the tough get fishing'
The Mimico Creek Qualifier will go down in history as one of the toughest
events in STS history. Only 3 of 16 anglers managed to register fish after
6 hours of fishing. - Even more frustrating was the regular appearance of huge Lake Ontario carp rolling well within casting range but refusing to bite. D&M Rods team member Fritz Vatter managed to take an early lead in the event with one small largemouth bass and a few bluegills, which remained the only fish caught for the first two hours of competition.
- Bill Ritchie a regular on the STS circuit and member of the London Carp Group
Team was the next angler to make his mark, despite showing up over an hour
late for the event. In Bill's trademarked style, he bagged a 1.1 kg
goldfish using a swim feeder. Bill managed to hold first place position
the entire day, right up until the last half hour of the tournament, when
another D&M Rods pro-staffer and relative newcomer to the STS series,
Thomas Kutchy, made his move and finally connected with one the big Lake
Ontario carp that had taunted contestants throughout the day. - Despite the pressure of a looming crowd of onlookers and the understanding that this
one fish could very well take the entire match and the Spiderline big fish
honors, Thomas remained cool and played the big fish like a pro, landing
the 8.95 kg fish with a comfortable 15 minutes still on the clock.
The scarcity of fish left little question as to who the top three finalists
would be, but when it came time for the final weigh-in Fritz Vatter was
disappointingly surprised to find that the fish he had been comfortably
sitting on for third place had escaped through a small hole in his keepnet.
Boguslaw Gradek also surprised the field with 11 shiners weighing in at
0.1 kg. It was a brilliant strategy on Boguslaw's part and one the netted
him a third place victory and boosted him into a tie for third in the
Invitational standings.
This was a big win for Thomas Kutchy as he now sits in top spot in the
invitational standings with a solid 4.5 point lead over fellow D&M Rods
team-mate Fritz Vatter. There is still one event left in the Central
Ontario Division, which will decide who advances to the year-end finale.
The next Central Ontario event is August 13 on Hamilton Harbour. Carp will
be the main fish species and projections are calling for new records being
set. There's still room for entrants, so register early to confirm a spot.
The Shorefishing Tournament Series is brought to you in part by Lindy
Little Joe - the manufacturer of Thill Gold Medal Series Floats, D&M Rods
specialized carp rods, Shadowear's new line of breathable Rainwear -
specifically designed for the serious fisherman, Cory Trepanier's line of
Caught on Canvas Originals, Spiderline premium fusion and monofilament
fishing lines - "If Big Fish are on the Line - you better hope it's
Spiderline!", Joe Bucher Tackle - a name which is synonymous with big pike
and musky, Double Loon Spinner - quite possibly the word best in-line spinner.
