STS UPDATE
'David Farmer Does It Again'
Once again the 'Young Gun' from St. Catharines Ontario, showed that age is
no obstacle in STS competition. This time it was a combination of
persistence and the strategic use of a pole that enabled David to take home
a gold medal and his second STS first place victory.
It was a difficult event to monitor with so many fish being caught. Even the officials
couldn't keep track of the leader board, until the water finally settled and
the 500 plus fish were tallied. It was only 0.26 kg that separated David
from second place finisher and D&M Rods Team member Lonnie King who also
relied on a pole, teamed with a Thill Mini-Shy bite float.
Panfish was the name of the game although many big carp also made their presence known by
surfacing throughout the day. Dave Puttock was the only competitor to
successfully hook into a large carp, but the combination of light line and
heavy weedgrowth denied Dave the opportunity of landing the tournament
winning fish.
Dennis Kreze took third place spot, to follow his first place
performance at the last Welland event in Dain City. Dennis' first fish of
the day was a smallmouth bass, which was hooked and landed in less than one
minute following the all-in signal. Incredibly this fish also ended up
being the Spiderline Big Fish of the day. As for the Team standings, the
Niagara Fishing Tours Agency prostaff made big strides in their bid for team
of the year buoyed by the high placements by team members David Farmer, Jeff
Turner, Arthur Turner and Pete Baxter.
In regards to the Invitational status, this tournament marked the third and
final event of the Niagara Division. David Farmer took top spot in the
Niagara Division with three consistent finishes in this series and a 2 point
berth over second place finalist Lonnie King. Lonnie is presently on an
amazing winning streak with has included two first place STS finishes and a
first place win at the London Carp Group tournaments in London,
Ontario.
The highest bidder for third Niagara Division Invitational seat
was Jeff Turner, who managed a fourth place finish at the Welland, just 0.01
kg ahead of his father Arthur Turner. Dennis Kreze, Arthur Turner and Mike
Dakin were all only 1 point behind Jeff in the final standings.
There are still three divisions yet to be settled. Three angers from each of
the New York, Central Ontario and Southern Ontario divisions have yet to be
selected.
Just a reminder that the year-end invitational will be held at Desy's
Fishing Preserve in Welland, Ontario. The angler with the biggest combined
weight over two days of competition will be crowned the 2000 STS
Invitational Champion and walk away with approximately $2,000 in combined
cash and prizes! During both days of competition Desy's back ponds will
also be open for pickup matches that will be run in parallel with the final
invitational event. The pickup match will end 1 hour prior to the STS final
weigh in, to allow plenty of time for spectators and pickup match
contestants to witness the results.
