Jerry Whitlock
The Seal Man

There are 3 docks on the river channel north of the 44 bridge where we always catch fish. When we moved to them we caught 5 or 6 one right after the other all on the white spinner bait in a 15 to 20 minute period. None over 1-1/2 to 2 lbs but all were very aggressive. I hung one that felt like he had to weigh five lbs - only to get him to the boat and see he was about a pound and a half. I got hung up on the corner of one of the docks there and my line got frayed a little.

The wind was gusting 10 to 15 MPH. I decided to keep throwing because I knew I had only one more corner dock post to fish - it was getting late and I needed to get the boat back to Sugar Creek Marina before sunset to store it on Sunday PM.

Bad idea. I threw up tight and bam - set the hook and snack - popped the line. A few seconds later the fish jumped up and tried to shake my spinner bait out of his mouth, without any tension on it because my line was in my hand by now - my wife and I both saw him and saw my spinner bait and heard it rattle.

Then about 30 seconds later he did the same thing, came up out of the water and shook his head trying to shake the spinner bait out. I have never seen that before. He was probably only about 2 lbs. I was going to get the dip net and try to catch him and get my lucky spinner bait back.

Didn't see him again.
