| Twice Caught Smallmouth Bass - Fritz's Tale | |
|
by Fritz Nordengren
As I reeled in, I checked the knot between Fireline and Mono, it was still good. As I looked at the end of the line, it was a clean break. Perhaps the Muskie pup had worn the line? I didn't bother to retie and I had now caught several fish on this line. The fish was gone -- probably the biggest fish of the day -- maybe the biggest Smallie of the trip...
Ronnie and I sat down, he fired the motor and the boat came up on plane, and we took a ride back to camp for dinner without much conversation. Later that night, we returned to Crab Lake and went back to the same cove, this time, working it in reverse.
The first spot we fished was the grass, about 100 feet from the lay down
where my Smallie had escaped. We each cast once, then, on Ronnie's second cast, a smallie hit his worm on a slider jig.As the fish came near the surface, it was obviously a big Smallie. This time, I used the net and brought the fish aboard. Thee was no fishing line hanging out of his mouth, but when Ronnie opened the smallie's mouth to remove his hook, we found my hook and half of the Smoke Pearl Blue Senko at the crusher in the back of its mouth.
We removed the Senko, took a photo. It weighed 2 pounds 13 ounces. We let the fish go.
I've never been happier to see someone else catch a fish.
