“Okay, you don’t have to be a smart ass.  I’m just wanting to find our way.  If we were off to the north on the way out, we’re still north of the power plant and should go south until we see the tower.”  I said hopefully.

“But what if it’s not in that direction?  How far do we go before we turn around and come back?  What if we turn around just short of it and come back this way, thinking it has to be in this direction?  We could be out here the rest of the day and maybe the night, too, looking for it.”

“I understand that, but I don’t know what else to do.”

“We could go ashore and ask someone,” Fred stated.

“Lets go along a ways and see if we see some houses or something.”

About this time, we saw someone up on shore walking along a little jetty that stuck out into the lake.  “Let’s go ask him,” Fred said, and so we did.  The man said the power plant was to the south, which was what we had kind of thought.  So we headed down that way, and it wasn’t long before we saw that huge tower sticking up out of the fog.

“Jim, you know we were pretty lucky today.  We should be a lot more careful!”

“Yes, I know.  Without luck, we could have been out in those shipping channels, for all we knew.”  I laughed.

The fog never did lift that day.  We never got run over by any big ships, although to this day, I think Fred believes we were in danger of that.  All I know is those were some of the best eating walleye I ever had.  I also got a big kick out of the look on Fred’s face when, back at the boat launch, I said, “Hey, look!  It’s that big guy from the bar last night!”
