PETA PROTESTS WHEATIES PUTTING DENNY BRAUER, BASS MASTERS CLASSIC CHAMP, ON BOX

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has launched a protest targeting General Mills, complaining that Denny Brauer should not be on the Wheaties box. They claim fishing is cruel and should not be glamorized to children.

General Mills proudly announced the inclusion of Brauer as one of their Wheaties athelets last June. Now PETA is protesting, asking its members and all animal rights supporters, to contact General Mills. The following is from an email sent out 8/27/98 by Bunny Huggers Gazette:

"People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had demanded Tuesday that Wheaties pull the boxes, arguing that fishing is cruel and not a pastime that requires great physical skill. 'Anglers have no place next to real sportsmen like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, who better represent the breakfast of champions,' PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said." When Brauer said he practices catch-and-release, they responded "PETA objects to the catch-and-release practice, however, saying fish are still traumatized and sometimes die."

In response, I posted the following feedback on their form at General Mills:

Thank you for putting Brauer on the Wheaties box. Please ignore the animal rights flakes.

I urge you to contact General Mills and tell them you like fishing and do not agree with the animal rights flakes. If General Mills hears only from those folks they will think they are in the majority.

I wrote this article for the Griffin Daily News after seeing PETA protesting a visit of the Oscar Mayer Wenniemobile in Atlanta.
