Classic Update
- On the Water
From BASS
On The Water
Classic contender Charlie Youngers of Florida and reporter Tim Hipps of
Washington, while motoring through main-lake waters the first day of
competition, learned the ferocity of Lake Michigan the hard way. Youngers,
on the downside of a four-foot roller, speared a wave, drenching the pair
and nearly knocking the angler unconscious. Both men were fine and
finished the day. Davy Hite, defending Classic champion also had something
hit his boat, and more specifically his press angler. Jeff Lampe of
Illinois was drenched when a blue heron relieved itself overhead. Where's
Gore-Tex when you need it!
Product News
Chevy Trucks has once again raised the industry bar for sport utility
vehicles with the introduction of the Avalanche. The Avalanche, being
billed as the Ultimate Utility Vehicle (UUV), has a roomy cab that
re-configures to become a full-size truck bed. The secret lies in the
"mid-bed" that quickly transforms a 5-foot, 3-inch cargo bed to a 8-foot,
1-inch bed by separating the second row of seats.
Since the introduction of the liquid crystal recording fish finder in 1984,
die-hard anglers have asked, "when will technology allow manufacturers to
duplicate the performance of the popular, but obsolete, paper chart
recorders?" ZERCOM now has an answer with the introduction of the LPG or
Liquid Paper Graph. The LPG incorporates a high resolution display with a
dual beam sonar configuration to provide excellent bottom detail. The unit
can be seen at the Classic Outdoor Show.
Notable Classic Fact
For the first time in BASS Masters Classic history, the Angler of the Year
(Tim Horton) and previous year's champion (Davy Hite) failed to weigh-in a
fish on day one.
Classic Trivia
The all-time lowest total weight caught by the contenders of a BASS Masters
Classic was 240 pounds, 2 ounces (188 bass; 41 anglers) in Louisville Ky.'s
