Vegetation and Oxygen
Larry BurgessDateline: 7/17/00
One of the facts that summer fishers often overlook is that the vegetation in a lake (especially a small lake) often reduces the O2 content in the water when the sun is not shining on it!! This often means that the best fishing is in the heat of the day!! This is especially true in clear waters.I have found that while fishing small, clear waters in the Southern Californian desert that the O2 content of the water reaches its apex at about 4 pm. During the dark night hours the O2 content of waters near vegetation is far below the preferred level of bass (or any member of the sunfish family). I have found that fishing during the hottest part of the day is often the most productive time!
When fishing these waters I use a float tube: wear a large hat with a broad brim: and, drink a lot of water. I have found that a slowly fished worm (plastic or natural) works well. And, The color is based on the local forage ( as well as the size and speed). Sometimes a surface lure can work very well and I always try one for some time before changing to the plastic.
Hot weather anglers should be very aware of the O2 content of the water.
