One of my FISHTALES on this site (February 15, 1998) talked about fall fishing for stripers (rockfish) below Pickwick Dam. The accompanying photo of Jerry Pigg of Waynesboro, TN with his 20+ lb. rockfish is living proof of the fishing resource of the Tennessee River.
Jerry was fishing from the bank in the fast running water just below Pickwick Dam. He was casting a 1-oz. leadhead jig with a 5-in. paddle-tail, shad-type plastic lure. I wish I could report that he had been using one of my bucktail jigs, but he wasnt.
If you have never hooked up with a fish that will absolutely wear you out, find a lake or river near you that has been stocked with stripers (rockfish). You can ask around and find out the techniques that the locals use to catch them.
A one-on-one battle with a rockfish like the one pictured here is eternally etched in the memory of the angler. The brief time in an anglers life spent fighting such a memorable fish will reward him or her with countless hours of pleasure.
Work for those moments!
