I had very good success with crocidile spoons, verticle for lakers in a NYC watershed . Same tech. as you described only I use a stout 6ft. 6 HMG spinning rod from Fenwick.
Came across the tech trying to retrieve a fishin partners rod that fell out of his hand on a cast on a cold day in Nov. While tryin to snag the rod or line verticle being that we were anchored my croc spoon got hammered by a 6lb brown trout. Well that was the begining of a wonderful fall fishing pattern. Lakers, smallies etc. verticle.
Oh yes I did manage to get my Buddy's rod and reel back too.
