A Slick Willie That Works!

Dateline: 9/13/00

I found a Slick Willie that is worth having!  Black Mamba makes a soft lure called a Slick Willie, and I have caught some bass on it recently.  Anything that will catch bass in Georgia in September is going to be in my boat from now on.

I posted a press release about this bait and the trouble they had getting the name approved in the US, and they were nice enough to send me some to try out.  The kit included four different baits in four colors, a pack of great VMC hooks, a tackle box for them and two videos to show how to use them.

After watching most of one of the videos, I went to my pond with a shad colored Slick Willie tied on.  I caught three bass, including a five pounder.  Those fish might have hit something else, but what impressed me was they hung on to it.  Two of the bass, including the big one, hit as the bait sank and I did not see them.  I just felt them when I pulled to make the bait dart.

Bass usually will spit out a bait when they feel pressure, but both those bass hung on.  I think it is because of the thickness and softness of the lures.

Last Sunday I used one at Lake Oconee in a Flint River Bass Club tournament.  It was a tough day - only 7 keepers were brought in by 15 men fishing from 7 am until 3 pm!  The only keeper I had hit a Slick Willie in a treetop.  My partner and I had fish the tree with spinnerbaits and worms without a bite.  I threw the Slick Willie into the treetop and felt the fish when I pulled to make the bait work. The bass held on long enough for me to set the hook!

Will this bait make you a pro fisherman?  No, and the video says that.  Will it help you catch fish?  Based on my experience, yes.  Bass will hit it when they are not actively feeding, and they will hold on to it good, giving you a chance to set the hook.  I will keep using them!

Ever fish with Slick Willie? Did it work for you?  Do you have any comments to offer? You can also post information about it for others on my message board - you must register to post but can read the board as a guest.
