Georgia Outdoor Writers

Dateline 5/8/00

At the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association spring conference in Bainbridge, GA. we got to participate in local outdoor activities. One of them was bass fishing with guides on Lake Seminole.

Linda and I went out Friday morning with Guide Randy Weaver. His father has guided on the lake all Randy's life, and Randy has been guiding there most of his life. Although he knows the lake well, and we fished great looking spots for six hours, we managed only two bass. Randy landed one on a spinnerbait that weighed about 4 pounds and Linda caught a small one on a buzz bait.

Lake Seminole is full of hydrilla, and we fished around it most of the time. As you can see from Linda's fish, it was buried in the hydrilla and she brought in a load of it when she caught the bass.It immediately dove into the grass and did not fight as she reeled it in.

Back at the dock, we found that few of the 7 fishermen that went out that morning had much luck. One group, fishing with David Chester, webmaster of Bassangler.com, took two our our group out and they had the best catch, landing about seven bass in the same areas Randy took us!

Ken Freel, an editor with PRIMEDIA, the company that ownes Georgia Sportsman and other state Sportsman and Fish and Game Magazines, landed what was rumored to be his best bass ever.

Even the folks thtt went crappie fishing had a tough time finding the fish. I did see a bass on the bed, and there were lots of bream in the shallows, enough that one member landed enough to have a fish fry.

There was a pattern that was working for bass while we were there - a picture and more about that next week!

Caught any nice bass lately? Tell me about them. Do you have any comments to offer? You can also post information about it for others on my message board - you must register to post but can read the board as a guest. Also, if you have thoughts you want to share about this topic, let me know about it at fishing.guide@about.com. for a "Fishtale" or discuss it in the chat room on every night at 8:00 ET. Tell others what you like.
