By Jack Gaither

I have always wondered about spinner baits. are the expensive ones the ones that catch more fish or are we paying for ads in the fishing mags.

When we decided we were going to Weekend X Up North Bill, Doug and I decided we needed some lures. I went to the bass pro page on the web and ordered some Rapalas, some spoons and then began looking at spinner baits. That was a jungle. There were this kind and that kind etc mostly running about $4 or so.

Then I ran across a bass pro special called "Tin o' Spins". It was 10 spinnerbaits for $15 with shipping, making them $1.50 each. We laid them out on the truck seat and took turns choosing. They gave me the extra one.

Anyway nearly every bass and pike we caught were caught on three of those 10 spinnerbaits, once we found the black chartreuse tail combo. Doug's was Red with chartreuse grub tail. We tried several of the others but these were the ones they wanted. All were gold willow and silver Colorado combos.

I tried a couple of my $4ones I already had and couldn't get a hit while the others caught fish so I went back. I hooked a couple of smallies on it on Crab Lake, too, but mostly they were hitting our walleye jigs.

I don't know if this proves anything or not but in the past I have caught a lot of largemouth on the $1.98 classic here in Seminole and have never caught anything on my $4 one although I keep it tied on because I like its looks whether the fish do or not. Anyway the cheap "Tin o' Jigs" from Bass Pro worked out well for us.

BTW. I caught one northern on one of the Rapalas (71/2") at $6.85ea. and Bill caught one on one of the Spoons at $3,49 ea. I do believe that these later lures will pay off in Seminole.  And I look forward to trying out my huge rattletrap that Bryan found in VanVliet. I think a 12lb bass might hit that one.
