Fishing Wisconsin

ROFB Tournament

By , About.com Guide

I just got back from my annual fall fishing trip to Wisconsin. Although it was hotter there than at home in Georgia, I managed to catch some bass and pike and had a great time.

Each year the Recreation - Outdoors - Fishing - Bass newsgroup from the internet has a tournament the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day. I have attended the past three and had a lot of fun. We have folks from all over the eastern US attend and it is a 1200 mile drive for me pulling my boat.

Leaving the Tuesday morning after Labor Day, I drove 14 hours to southern Wisconsin near Madison and stopped at a motel for a few hours sleep. The next morning I arrived in Rhinelander just before noon and got checked into my motel there. Thankfully, there were no problems driving or pulling the boat.

Steve Huber, a local muskie guide, dropped in when he saw my boat. Steve sets up this tournament called the “North Woods Classic” each year and we have about 20 fishermen show up. Other than fishing we have a great time eating and swapping tall tales with each other in person. All of us met on the internet and this gives us a chance to meet face to face.

The tournament is held on Boom Lake, right in the city limits of Rhinelander. It is a 3000 acre lake just off the Wisconsin River and the river is part of the lake. Lakes up there are very different since most were formed by glaciers and do not have the types of channels and points I usually fish in lakes here with structure formed by running water.
