Mounted and Replica Bass

Getting a Replica Made

By Ronnie Garrison, About.com

On February 10, 1991 I caught my biggest bass ever in a Flint River Bass Club tournament at Jackson Lake. That bass weighed 9 pound 7 ounce and was released after she was weighed. I did not get a picture of it, other than in my mind, and have always wished I had one. Many times I had thought about getting a replica mount done but I was unsure how it would look, and the cost was high.

This past year Great Fish Reproduction Studios in Boliver, MO started advertising on my internet site so I contacted them. They were very helpful and we came up with a length and girth for the bass based on its weight, a chart showing size and weight for bass, and my memory of the fish. We also discussed color and head size.

On February 25 I paid them $185 and they started work on my replica, saying it could take six to eight weeks for them to finish it and get it to me. On March 11 the replica arrived at my house and I called to pay the final $100. The total cost of $285 included the replica, a hardwood mounting board and a plaque with my name, the weight of the fish and the date I caught it.

I was surprised and pleased with the speed of their service, and do not know if they speeded up my job because of my site or not. I did not ask for or receive any discount and did not ask for any special considerations on the service.

That price is higher than a mount of a fish, but not that much worse, and I was able to release the bass. I am pleased with the mount, it looks good hanging on my wall with the other bass I have mounted. I highly recommend a replica of any fish you want to release.

To make sure the replica is as accurate as possible you should weigh it, measure its length and girth, and get several color pictures. A picture is probably the most important after the weight because it would help estimate the girth and length if you can not measure it.
