Christmas Fishing Memories

Christmas Fishing All By My Self

By Ronnie Garrison, About.com

Christmas has always been just about my favorite holiday because I have always had two weeks off work. Since 1974, I have spent at least a week at Clark's Hill each Christmas. Until hybrid fishing got popular in the mid 1980's, I usually had the lake to myself. Most people thought fish did not bite during the winter! Christmas 1976 was typical of my holidays. By Christmas Eve, Linda and I had been fishing at the lake for 4 or 5 days. We went to my parents house Christmas Eve and spent Christmas day with them. After dinner Linda headed back to Griffin and work and I headed back to the lake.

For the next 5 days, I did not see another person. It was great, just me and my dog Merlin. For five days, when I was hungry, I ate. When I was sleepy, I slept. The rest of the time, I was in the boat fishing! I would not have seen anybody else after 5 days but I had go into town to get gas for the boat.

In 1977 I found out how productive winter fishing can be. On my depthfinder I had been seeing fish near the bottom on a ridge that was 10 feet deep. I could not get them to hit a worm or a plug. Then I remembered something I had read about jigging Little Georges for fish. I tied one on and dropped it down. When I moved it up and down a couple of times, I got a strike. After several misses, I started learning how to hook the fish.

On December 22, 23 and 24, I limited out. I missed more fish than I caught. I went home on Christmas Day and when I returned, the fish were gone. I didn't find them again like that until several years later. Now, every Christmas, I immediately head to that ridge to see if my Christmas present bass are there.

In 1981 I went back to the lake on a very windy Christmas day, got in the boat and headed out to fish some that afternoon. Deer season would open the next day and I planned to do some hunting. I really needed a deer for the freezer since I had not killed one during the first season.

As I fished down a bank protected from the wind, I saw a doe and spike walk out of the woods to the open area near the water. They laid down in the sun only yards from me. The boat drifted against the bank across a small cove and I watched the deer for several minutes. After deciding the deer were not going to move,I cranked up and ran back to the van at the boat ramp. I grabbed my 30-30 and went back. The deer were still there!
