The Bassmasters Classic - Close Don't Count

The Bassmasters Classic is arguably the most important tournament in bass fishing. It is being held this year on Grand Lake in Tulsa, Oklahoma, February 24 - 26, 2013. Amateur fishermen have a chance to qualify for this tournament through the Federation Nation club route. I came within one bass of making it to the Classic 30 years ago. I often wonder how my life and fishing would have been different if I had qualified way back then.

This article has links to several more articles about the Classic and to BASS pages that will keep you updated.

Academy Sports and Outdoors – Top Sponsor of Women’s Bassmaster Tour

(GREENVILLE, SC) – Academy Sports and Outdoors is adding professional women’s bass fishing to its long list of company sponsored female sports. In a joint press conference with ESPN/BASS, Academy officials announced that the sporting goods retailer is now Presenting Sponsor of the 2008 Women’s Bassmaster Tour.

2008 is an historic year for the WBT. BASS officials announced that the WBT competitor who wins Angler of the Year title in 2008 will fish the 2009 Bassmaster Classic. It will be the first time ever that a woman has fished the Bassmaster Classic.

Fishing continues to be a popular lifestyle among Americans. A recent survey indicates that 25% of men fish, as do 8% of women in America. Recreational fishing outranks football, basketball, baseball, and tennis among Americans’ favorite pastime. Fishing also contributes significantly to the economy in all 50 states, especially in the 11 southern states in which Academy has stores. Anglers spent $5.3 billion nationwide on fishing equipment alone last year.

According to Rodney Faldyn, President and CFO, “Academy Sports and Outdoors is a sports and outdoors lifestyle store. We offer the right gear for every member of the family. A significant portion of our customer base is women.” Faldyn added, “Sponsoring the WBT confirms our commitment to women and families. Our company is continually expanding our offering of outdoor gear tailored to female customers. That includes fishing tackle, firearms, and outdoor apparel designed exclusively for women.”

WBT tournament weigh-ins will take place at Academy stores, with the exception of the final tournament on Arkansas’ Lake Hamilton. Tournament activities will include special events in Academy store parking lots to coincide with the weigh in, as well as WBT store promotional events and sales. Tournament dates and locations include:

April 10-12 Lake Lewisville, Texas Weigh in at Academy Sports and Outdoors – Lewisville
May 22-24 Lake Neely Henry, Ala. Weigh in at Academy Sports and Outdoors – Gadsden
June 19-21 Old Hickory Lake, Tenn. Weigh in at Academy Sports and Outdoors – Nashville
Sep 18-20 Clarks Hill Lake, Ga. Weigh in at Academy Sports and Outdoors – Evans
Oct 23-25 Lake Hamilton, Hot Springs, Ark.

Academy Sports and Outdoors was founded in San Antonio, Texas in 1938. With over 105 stores in 11 states and growing, Academy Sports and Outdoors is one of the largest sporting goods retailers in America.
