Jay Yelas on Catching Schooling Bass

Saturday August 15, 2009
Jay gives tips on locating and catching schooling bass, including which baits to use. During the hot summertime bass can be hard to find but, when they are schooling on top, they show themselves. There are many ways to catch schooling bass this time of year.

A memory of schooling bass stands out in my mind. One time in August I found a school of 12 and 13 inch largemouth hitting shad on a point. I had a popping cork and two flies tied on and I started casting to them. When the first bass hit I saw many others following it to the boat so I reeled slower and, sure enough,a second bass hit the trailing fly. I landed two keeper bass at the time.

Over the next few minutes I made ten more casts and did the same thing. I landed 22 bass on just 11 cast - the fastest fishing ever for me. Then the school went down and I stopped catching bass

Do you fish for schooling bass? How do you locate them and what baits do you use to catch them? Share your tips in the comments section below.
