Nice article for beginners. The statement about not buying everything on the shelves is very true. Stick to the basics like plastic worms, crankbaits, crawfish imitators, topwaters, etc. Check out what the people are using who weigh in fish at tournaments i.e. look at the lures tied to their poles.

Some tournament fishermen take lures off and put rods up before coming in. Others will gladly share what worked for them. And local bait and tackle stores can usually tell you what is working.
