A strange thing happens on our lakes and big ponds this time of year. You hear a lot about the fall turnover and how it affects fishing. Be prepared and take advantage of the changes when they happen in your favorite fishing hole.

Great article. One other important tip for the turnover. A big, cold rain will speed up this process. In the Chicagoland area, we had weather in the 60s to 70s for most of September. We had a brief cold front with HUGE rains. The temperature was in the high 40s to low 50s at night and it stayed in the 50s during the day. 2 days of this with over 2 inches of rain. All the ponds and small lakes are turned over. I’m not sure how Lake Michigan was affected, but everything else has turned over and the fish are definitely scattered all over the place.

Good point about the rain – a heavy rain caused a turnover last summer in my pond and diluted the O2 so bad I had a fish kill. Has not happened this year and should not now that it has cooled off.

To answer Kevin, my fishing partner and I went out on Lake Michigan on the 27th and had the best day(if you can call 4 hrs in the early morning a day)that we have seen in weeks! & Kings between 6 and 14 lbs. Could have been 8 except for some poor net work on my part. Hey, it was dark! Yes the lake is cooling off.
