Save Gas Fishing

Friday July 25, 2008
Can you save gas and still go fishing? According to a recent survey by AnglerSurvey.com high gas prices are causing anglers to cut back on their fishing plans. And as the price of gas went up sharply in the last two years the number of anglers saying they will cut back in fishing trips has gone up since last summer.
There are ways to keep your gas cost down and still go fishing. Here are some of my suggestions. Add yours in the comments section below

Nice article on saving gas. You may also want to consider a smaller towing rig if your into the market for a new vehicle. Many smaller 8 cylinders or bigger 6 cylinders can greatly improve your gas mileage. Also make sure your trailer and vehicle tires are at the correct air pressure as this can save gas as well :)

Great suggestion - I will add it to my list. Also, keep your boat and tow vehicle motors tuned for best performance.

I spend around 200 days a year on or around the water and I have noticed the reduction of bigger bass type boats and an increase in smaller boats with noticeably smaller motors. (i.e. a 250 hp motor on a 18′ boat to a 50 hp motor on a 16′ boat). These smaller rigs seem to be catching on quickly. a smaller rig saves gas and allows a smaller boat to perform well while doing it.

I’ve started fishing closer to home…and going for different species. Carp fight hard, are challenging to hook, and can get BIG. Ditto for gar and catfish. I’m skipping the 1.5 hour trip down to the gulf, and enjoying bank fishing about 2 minutes away.

Great article, with lots of room for addition of good info. Love the idea of staying longer if your trip is farther away than expected. This can also be helpful if your spouse is along. Staying close to home also has its own merit as Mr Brian suggests.

For years when I had a one day tournament on Sunday I would go on Saturday, fish all day and camp, then fish on Sunday. Now I sometimes drive home on Saturday night - getting old and camping is not as easy, but is sure saves time on the road and gas. I hope to do more of that, have a van fixed up just for that kind of camping.
