Cooking Gar On A Campfire
Wednesday May 21, 2008
David read my gar profile and the part about gar being inedible. Since I did that profile I have cleaned and cooked a gar. David offers another possible way to cook on, by burying it in a campfire. Have you ever tried cooking a gar in any way, including in a campfire? Share your comments in the section for them by clicking on comments below.
The big Flint River Gar in the picture above was caught by Joel Pasch . Would you try to clean and cook it?

When I was a teenager in the mid 70’s, we would go camping on the San Saba River near Goldthwaite, TX. and run trotlines every summer. We would fry the gar while we were camping. The bigger ones get course and grainy as you would expect, but the smaller ones fry up real nice.
We would hang them up by the head and use tin snips to cut up the belly starting at the anal opening. Then peel the shell off.
Don’t let me mislead you though. They ain’t flounder, but they are good.

About a month ago I gigged one and threw him in the coals like the previous article said, I never heard a pop but i firgured him on being done when he was charred black on the outside. The scales flaked right off and he tasted good. I have fried a few in the past and they weren’t bad, but I believe throwing them in the fire is the better method, if you could get some butter and salt under those scales I think it would be super good.
