Winter Fishing Tips

I like fishing in the winter and have caught some big bass this time of year. This past Sunday, January 6, 2008, I got a 8.80 pound bass in a club tournament at Jackson Lake. I posted details of the day in my daily fishing diary in the forum. The fish hit a Strike King Series 5 crankbait in Sexy Shad color. The day was fairly tough and I won the tournament with two bass weighing 12.18 pounds. My other bass was a nice 3.38 pounder and looked good before I landed the big one. crankbaits for me is probably the best bait to use in the winter months. even with the temp. between 15 and 22 degrees most of the morning it was some of the best fishing ive ever seen… we consistently pulled bass from 3 to 8 pounds everyday by simply bouncing the crankbaits off the rocks. i get close to the shore line (about 20′out) and cast parralel with the shore bouncing it off of any rocks or sticks in the water. some of the biggest bass ive ever caught were caught using this trick and it even works well in the warmer months. but for me i put away all plastics this time of year and fish different varieties of crankbaits, shad color usually work best but the brighter colors will also work especially in clearer water…. so if your reading this TRY IT, it will work and it will bring in large bass time after time… good luck.
A crankbait is what the 8 pounder in the picture hit. They are my favorite baits this time of year. I use a jig and pig a lot, too.
use these 3 fishing tips too.1. Fish face upstream. If you are behind them, you can catch them directly in front of you.2. If you can see to the bottom of the creek, they can see you! Approaching a creek or stream from the bank often spooks fish.3. It is much easier to cast to a pocket, pool or small riffle from the center of a stream and maintain a slow retrieve. Best of all you are in an ideal position to cast effectively towards either bank.
